design principles g224 vbr postcard design

Design principles was one of the hardest classes I’ve had so far.  Honestly, the only reason why is I couldn’t seem to find enough time to work on all the aspects of the project that I wanted.  The final design turned out pretty good though, IMO.

band postcard mini poster g 224

Design Principle G224 UH

Sooooo… The main project of this class is to create a media advertising piece.  I have a choice of pamphlet or postcard.  Since I already love, love, love www.vistaprint.com ’s service, I’m definitely going postcard.  I think I also really enjoy the idea of making the front of the postcard only an image so it doubles as a collector’s “mini-poster” for fans, as well as a promotional advertising item.

Week 1: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The type of event and artists:

This will be a design detailing the upcoming show of a local band.  The location will be central Florida, the performers can be seen here http://www.myspace.com/victoryboundrival. Basically, it’s four rambunctious young men who have an intense love for music and are about to bust big into the scene.

The name of event:

Victory Bound Rival: checkmate

Target Audience:

  • Ages 15-25 (school age)
  • Male and female
  • Middle class
  • Lives in rural/urban areas

Primary message of design:

Fun concert to attend!

Secondary message of design:

Great music!

For this design, I hope to create a poster that is colorful, fun, and exciting.  I want it to be a bit urban and edgy, but still friendly and inviting.  I’ll probably collaborate from one of the boys from the band, but I don’t think it will be an actual event.  I named the concert Checkmate, simply because I think it’s a wonderful term for where the band is in their career right now.  They are right on the brink of being signed and making it “big.”  I wish them the best in this, and I hope this design might spur some interest in more local concerts, so I can go!

WEEK 2: THUMBNAILING

For my thumbnails, I plan on taking photos and making a photo montage using Photoshop and illustrator.  Each image will be realistic but with exaggerated color and striking tones.  I want my design to include each of the band members, since the target audience will soon associate the band members to their music and shows.  Since my target audience is middle class teenagers, I want it to have harsh shadows and highlights.

I plan on making the photos realistic, but with almost a fantasy type feel, like many of the movies that are so popular to today’s middle class teen culture.

I really like the idea of doing a postcard that is 5 x 7.”  I know a website, vistaprint.com, where I can have these printed for cheap.  I’ve used illustrator to do these thumbs, but keep in mind they will be all made with real photography that we will shoot.  Each of the thumbs has some type of theme.

GRUVER-WK2AS3-THUMBS

TOP LEFT: This thumb will have the faces of all the band members poking their heads through a mass amount of bubbles.  Each band member will have some type of facial attribute also made out of bubbles, like a mustache or exaggerated beard.  I think the contrast of the bubble with the faces would be instantly attention grabbing but still fun.

TOP RIGHT: This thumb will have a dark stormy sea and a dark stormy sky with the 4 band members dressed Cpt. Ahab style in nautical gear.  The thing that makes this design unique and fun is that the boat will actually be a large red umbrella.

MIDDLE LEFT: This thumbnail is a bit more complex.  Each band member will be dressed as a real life representation of a chess piece: knight, king, queen, and bishop.  They will be standing on a huge chess board with rooks in the background.

MIDDLE RIGHT: This thumbnail doesn’t have as much of a theme, but I think the simple design would demand to be flipped over if you saw it on the ground.  The front of the postcard would be completely white except the tops of the boys’ heads.  They each have crazy awesome hair, so they would still be recognizable.

BOTTOM LEFT: This thumb will feature two girls playing chess, almost leaning in to kiss.  One very feminine, the other a bit rocker.

BOTTOM RIGHT: This postcard design will feature the guys all wearing black shirts and blue jeans.  On their faces though we will paint eyes right above their mouths, so it looks like little faces.  Each face will house a crazy expression.  Maybe on their shirts we will have the info for the event.

wk3-as-2-gruverlayers

This class was one of the most difficult for me, and I think the reason why is I didn’t get to spend any time on my projects.  Let’s just say that real life got in the way and it totally sucked!  I didn’t really want to post any of my assignments since I wasn’t happy with any of them (except the one of my hubby up there done entirely in illustrator using layers and the pen tool,) but I figured someone might get some use out of it.

Our main project of this class was designing a book cover in illustrator.  I had such high hopes for the assignment, but couldn’t seem to get anything how I wanted it.  Blah.

tell my husband to help me

I’ve been working on a cake site, but it’s still in construction.  I’ve already had some great tips about the fonts, but any other tips would be greatly appreciated.  Ps. tell my husband to help me make it! AH!

Assignment 2: Brainstorming and Concept Development

By Thursday, January 21, 2010, complete the following design exercise and post to this Discussion Area.

  1. Decide what your client will be advertising this week, a product or service.
  2. Who is the target market? Give a specific age range and economic status. What information do they need to have in order to make a decision to make a purchase? What images appeal to this demographic?
  3. Find three ads in the real world created by “competitors” of your client for a similar product or service. Describe what you like and do not like in each one.
  4. Make a list of 20 words that describe how the product or service will be seen by the target market. For example, if my client is a travel agent who provides luxury tours to the Caribbean, my list might look like this: luxury, warmth, adventure, safe, pampered, sun, fine dining, shopping, relaxing. The words can be nouns, adjectives or verbs. The point is to begin by actually describing the message your finished piece will communicate.
  5. Prepare at least 40-50 pencil or marker thumbnails of standard and unique newspaper ads. Be certain to use the information in the Washington Post’s recommended Web pages.
  6. Select three distinctly different ads and ad sizes among the 40-50 thumbnails. Redraw them as Rough Layouts in InDesign or Illustrator to scale with the SAU chart. Layouts can be a mixture of design and styles. They can be centered or not. They can be headline-heavy, image-heavy, logo-heavy, or body copy-heavy. Their look can be solid (heavily filled with information) or open (lots of white space). Their tone can be light hearted or quite serious. Save a working file in InDesign or Illustrator. (You will come back to these documents in a future assignment.) Then save a copy of the file as a PDF or .eps.
  7. This ad will be printed in black and white. Show your work in black and white to the class. You may use images in this ad, but take into consideration the thin, porous nature of newsprint, and how photos look when printed in black and white on newsprint. Focus on typography.

Sheri Gruver Week2 Assignment 2

Service: Baby Shower and Engagement Cakes

Target Market:

  • Ages 20’s through 40’s
  • Middle to higher class

Images that appeal to this market:

  • Champagne
  • Flowers
  • Cakes
  • Designer dresses/accessories

Information needed on ad:

  • Average price per slice
  • Contact info

20 Terms:

  1. Delicious
  2. Butter cream
  3. Wedding
  4. Light
  5. Fluffy
  6. Engagement
  7. Sugar
  8. Extravagant
  9. Party
  10. Icing
  11. Elegant
  12. Love
  13. Cake
  14. Diamonds
  15. Couples
  16. Ring
  17. Champagne
  18. Celebration
  19. Beauty
  20. Presents
  21. Save the date
  22. Baby
  23. Fun
  24. Laugh

Competitor’s advertisements:

For all of these ads I can tell that having a picture to showcase my cake skills is probably the number one priority.  It needs to be something to immediately tell my clients what skill set I have available for their specific needs.  I also like how the first add lists the cake flavors that are holiday specific.  I love the elegant font of the second add.  I also like how simple and clean it is.  I really like the layout of the last add, but wouldn’t choose the same font for the body of the text.

so sleepy…. adv typography

started advanced typography.  so far it’s been a lot of research and thinking, but the last assignment was to take a well known document, tear it apart, and remake it.  I took the 2nd amendment and made this:

gruverwk3as2

it’s really more or less a quick rough, but i like the idea of it.

i’m so super exhausted.  after 4 or 5 weeks of overtime (don’t even know how long) and not having a weekend off during that time has really just worn me down.  i was super excited about the checks… but taxes took out about $300+ of it, so it’s not that exciting.

i’m just so darn sleepy!

on the good side, i have my christmas tree setup, most of my presents wrapped, and some lights on the front of my house (even thought they don’t work.) :-)

looking forward to the holiday season.  Christmas will be here, at the new house, and I want to make amazing food!  Anyone know of any AMAZING recipes?

mixed media wk5 as2

Sheri Gruver Wk5As2

Part 1
Study the following three mixed media paintings. After completing the reading assignments, experiment with combining different media. Use the media required for this course by themselves or with others, as you wish. Try at least four different media combination when experimenting. Try conducting your experiments on watercolor paper, pastel paper, or gesso-primed paperboard. If you are planning to scan in your work, be sure it is thoroughly dry before scanning.. Make small compositions for this assignment. Use the “Teapot, Teacup” sketches from week 1 as a starting points for all four. Provide a verbal description of the techniques used.

gruverwk5as2plain

gruverwk5as2images1

First drawing – For this one I used marker to create the outlines of the teapot and cup. I then added layers of chalk pastel and more markers. I found that when you layer chalk pastel over marker, it creates a really nice faded but solid shadow. A muted color of whatever marker you used.

Second drawing – This drawing was started with an outline of the teapot and cup using charcoal pencil. Then, I used layers or marker and chalk pastel to get the colors I wanted. For the background I put drenched the paper with water and rubbed chalk pastel over it. This created an almost paste like consistency with the pastel, so I smeared it around and created a really neat texture.

Third drawing – For this drawing I used a lot of charcoal pencil to create the outline and shading of the teapot and cup. I then rubbed in colored chalk pastel and went back with more charcoal pencil. I used water and charcoal pencil for the smoky background.

Fourth drawing – For this final drawing I used a lot of chalk pastel and marker. I used the technique of layering chalk on top of the marker to create a faded but solid shadow. I wanted a really airy feel, so I used my finger a lot.

Part 2
Think about the following discussion points. Post your thoughts on any 2 of them in the Discussion Area. Your response should be no more than three paragraphs long. You may then respond to your classmates’ comments by the end of the week and submit your response to the Discussion Area. Try some of the techniques that others liked and report your results. You may also let us know about any new discoveries you have made since your initial response.

2) Did you discover any additional tips or tricks for mixing these techniques?

A trick I discovered was layering chalk pastel over wet marker. It creates a solid but muted shadow. Almost like a layer in Photoshop where the transparency is turned down. I really like how this looks so different than any of the medium being used to create it.

5) Locate an online tutorial or video demonstrating mixed media techniques and discuss what you learned.

I found this online tutorial at youtube.com. I really enjoy it because it shows how messy and fun mixed media can be. I also just love the energy of the artist. She uses so many things in her art: felt, gesso, paint, water, sponges, and much more. It’s just super. Very inspirational!

Part 3
Choose one painting and discuss the question located below each image. Be specific.

gd210_w5_l4_a_gr5

Some illustrations focus on color rather than form. Do you think this approach would work better for a technical article or one that is more subjective in nature? Why?

I often like to do my illustrations focusing on color rather than form. I think it catches the eye and requires the viewer to really focus on the piece. I think this would work better for a subjective article, simply because it is almost subjective in its creation. It could be used in a technical article but to do so might take away the preciseness needed in most technical articles.

MIXED MEDIA WK5 WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

In the previous week, we had to submit concepts for an acrylic painting that will later be turned into a poster for an event.

Since I was so inspired by the movie, I decided to do a project based on “Where the Wild Things Are.”

FINAL WITH COPY:

gruverwk5as1wcopy

I started with a black blackground.  I then waited until it dried and slowly added in layers of purple for where I wanted to place my monster and boy.  The purple was kind of like a draft for me since it doesn’t show up very well against the black.  I then went in and did layers of white and yellow to build up the eyes, teeth, crown, and boy’s costume.  After this all dried, which took some time, I went in with glazes of purples, bright blues, grays, greens, and teals to create the monster.  I used these glazes over the yellows, whites, as well as the black background.  This created some great depth.

This process took hours because it was so humid in FL while I was doing this (longer drying time), but I’m very happy with the outcome.

MIXED MEDIA WK4AS3

Assignment 3: Project 3: Concept Sketches

By Week 4, Day 4, select your best five or six concepts, scan them in, and post them to the Discussion Area so that your classmates can view them.

Now is the time to begin generating concepts for this project. The project is to create an illustration with appropriate copy, suitable for use as a poster to announce a special event of your choice, such as a music festival, carnival, parade, etc. The design should be primarily based upon visual imagery, not type. Siince this is a course based upon the use of traditional media, the illustration is of primary importance, as well as the tagline and concept. You may use your own method of approach for this stage or try some of the suggestions given. Keep in mind that the copy will be superimposed over the acrylic illustration. No digital backgrounds are acceptable, so plan your design accordingly.

Once you have collected several ideas, make small sketches for each (pencil is fine) with the intended copy printed beneath each one. Please indicate within the layout where you plan to place the copy. You can do this using double lines or pencil in the text. Prepare your sketches for professional presentation by formatting them with a black line around each one and space in between them so that they are not run together. Be sure to write your name on each sheet as well.
